Bloomsburg Softball Drops Three in South Carolina
FLORENCE, SC-The Bloomsburg University softball team opened its 2006 season on Saturday by dropping three games at the Francis Marion Tournament in Florence, South Carolina. The Huskies lost three, one-run games on the day losing 3-2 to USC-Upstate, 3-2; 2-1 to Georgia College and State University; and 2-1 in 10 innings to Lenoir-Rhyne.
In the opener with the University of South Carolina (USC)-Upstate, the Huskies scored twice in the top of the first with the runs coming in on a two-run homer from Tara Reed (Williamsport/Williamsport). Lisa Bohner (Northumberland/Shikellamy), who had doubled, scored in front of Reed on the homer.
USC-Upstate, though, scored single runs in the first, fourth and seventh inning to get the victory.
The second game of the day for the Huskies was a 2-1 loss to Georgia College and State University (GCSU). GCSU held a 1-0 lead into the top of the sixth when Bohner hit a solo homer for the Huskies to tie the game. However, Kay Bailey hit a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth which proved to be the game-winner.
The Huskies final game of the day was a 10-inning, 2-1 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne College. The game was scoreless through seven innings before the Lenoir-Rhyne scored in the top of the eighth inning. Bloomsburg tied the game in the bottom of the eighth when Bohner hit a sacrifice fly scoring pinch-runner Jess Snader (Mount Joy/Donegal) who started the inning on second base with the tie-breaking rule.
Bloomsburg (0-3) will face UNC-Pembroke and North Carolina Central in action on Sunday at the tournament.
